AT&T has had a few hiccups when it comes to having enough bandwidth to support all of its smartphone users. To help alleviate some of this congestion, the wireless carrier launched a free Wi-Fi hot zone in New York City's Times Square in May. This week, AT&T announced that will add Charlotte, N.C. to this pilot program.
What's cool about this announcement is that you don't have to have a smartphone to take advantage of the new service. All AT&T wireless and broadband customers can access free Wi-Fi in the hot zones from any Wi-Fi enabled device. This means you'll be able to surf the web from your PDA in these hot zones without having a smartphone data plan.
AT&T also announced that it plans to expand the project with the launch of a third hot zone in Chicago in the coming weeks.
