SugarSync Goes Free

From Jennifer Johnson, About.com GuideMay 16, 2009

I’ve got good news for users who want to be able to synchronize data between their PC, Mac, and mobile device: SugarSync is now offering a free account with up to 2GB of storage. SugarSync is a service that lets you back up, access, and share your files from a Mac, PC, and mobile device.

SugarSync offers multi-system, cross-platform syncing along with file explorer integration, web access with sharing, and photo gallery features. SugarSync offers clients for Windows Mobile devices as well as BlackBerry and the iPhone/iPod Touch. The free accounts include access to mobile clients.

Although the free storage won’t let you back up all of your music files, 2GB will go a long way with simple documents and files. There are other competing services on the market, but SugarSync is different in that it lets you add folders anywhere on your system that will be synchronized. In addition, SugarSync’s free account limits you to syncing with two computers. Other offerings (some of which are paid services) do not have this same limitation.

SugarSync also offers paid tiers of service, so if you decide to try it out and fall in love with it, you can always upgrade to a tier with faster transfer speeds or additional storage in the future when your needs change.
