I’ve seen quite a few announcements for software that is available for the Apple iPhone, BlackBerry OS, and Android-powered smartphones lately. Keep in mind that many software manufacturers offer the same software for various platforms. For instance, I recently caught a press release that talked about FitSync’s new Android offering. FitSync also offers its software for Windows Mobile, Palm, and Java powered devices which means you can get the same great software on your PDA without having to upgrade to a different device or search for a comparable program.
Many of us are not surprised to learn that there are Mac and Windows versions of different software packages, so why should we forget that there are different versions of PDA-friendly software programs for different operating systems as well? Although much attention has been devoted to the newer operating systems and platforms lately, don’t feel left out: Most programs are still available for your PDA as well!

Very slightly off topic but the google description that brought me here said “Pocket PC versus Palm the great debate” – or something like that.
I’m a bit out of touch and loved my old Palm PDA better than any other gadget before or since.
Has that brand completely died? Or is the Windows Mobile platform the only way?
Thanks.
Hi Luke,
Palm PDAs are still around, though Palm isn’t promoting them very much any more so it’s easy for them to slip under one’s radar. You can still find the Palm T|X, Palm Tungsten E2, and Palm Z22 devices at the Palm store at http://store.palm.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3238806&clickid=mainnav_accessories_txt.
In addition, many Palm devices are available through online retailers and eBay (though you’ll want to be careful who you purchase from).
Like you said, Windows Mobile devices are also prevalent, with HP being one of the main manufacturers today.
Thanks!
Jennifer
Thanks Jennifer.
Do you happen to know which PDA/mobile system can read PDFs? Or have apps that can do it on their operating systems?
thanks,
Luke
Hi Luke,
You can view PDF files on both Palm PDAs as well as Windows Mobile / Pocket PC PDAs.
Here’s some more information on software that makes it possible for a PDA to read PDF files:
For Palm OS – http://palmtops.about.com/od/softwareaddons/tp/PDF_Palm.htm
For Windows Mobile / Pocket PC OS – http://palmtops.about.com/od/softwareaddons/tp/PDF_Windows_Mobile.htm
Thanks!
