Wired's Take On PDAs

Tuesday November 25, 2008

Not too long ago, Wired posted an article called Five Gadgets That Were Killed by the Cellphone. In this article, it listed PDAs as one of the gadgets that were on the way out. While it's true that smartphones have taken some market share from PDAs, they're not completely dead. In fact, HP and Palm still produce PDAs and still view this market as viable.

Smartphones have their benefits, but they also have detriments, such as being locked to a carrier and requiring monthly service fees and costly cellular data plans. PDAs, on the other hand offer complete flexibility. What's more, much of the software that is available for smartphones is also compatible with your PDA.

Many people have expressed viewpoints that differ with the Wired article. I'd love to hear your take on this article and where PDAs are headed.

I currently do not have much use for a cell phone, other than convenience. But I am completely hooked in to my Palm T/X, both for work AND home……nice to know they are still available, roughly 270 dollars new on Amazon.com through Palm………..

I had a long and Torid love with a product call PSION. They were like mini PC. I don’t think they are made any more, and that is a real shame.

Anyway, I get uncomfortable with devices that claim to do everything. Often, these multi-use. multifunction devices don’t do a good job at everything, some times they don’t even do a good job on even one thing.

With a One-Device-Does-It-All, should you lose it or should it go on the fritz, they you’re screwed. I believe there is safety in redundancy. Yah, they may cost a little more, but what is $50 or $100 bucks if you were to lose everything.

Even though pda’s and smartphones share pretty much the same capacities, I still prefer my palm Tx to any smartphone any day. You have wi fi at no cost, for example, and a bigger screen size. Besides, it is so much cheaper than a smartphone.

I have a Palm Treo 755P, and a Zire 71. In addition to backing up the Smartphone on my laptop, I also beam the info to the Zire 71.

I like the larger screen and the larger type on the Zire. They both have their place.

Brought my palm T3 abot four years ago and was told that with mobile phones it would be obsolete in a year.
Problem with mobiles they are used everyday and because they are trying to cram so much into them they invariably become a Jack of all Trades Master of none.
My palm is still going strong and I cant see myself switching to a phone for all the things I use on it because the screen size is just too small and a phone is meant to be just that a phone…
