More Layoffs for Palm
Palm recently announced plans to lay off more staff after reporting its fifth consecutive quarterly loss. Given that Palm is still one of the big PDA manufacturers, this isn't the type of thing we like to see. Reportedly, Palm has laid off as many as 200 employees from its U.S. workforce. Additional job cuts could come in the form of trimming staff from Palm's international operations. The lay offs are part of an attempt to cut costs and improve the company's financial position as it is struggling to compete and bring new products to market. At the end of 2007, the company laid off 250 employees. As of August of this year, Palm reported having just over 1,000 employees.
CEO Ed Colligan's assured investors that the company is "preparing to launch a new platform that will usher in a new era at Palm." Even so, many industry watchers are doubtful the company will be able to compete with RIM's BlackBerry line, countless Windows Mobile devices, and Apple's iPhone. Here's hoping things start looking more promising for the company soon.
