Application Shopping Coming Soon to Windows Mobile

Thursday September 11, 2008
One of the longstanding and appealing features of Windows Mobile is its support for third-party applications. Even so, Windows Mobile doesn’t offer the same convenience of shopping for software that Apple offers with the App Store on the iPhone.

Although Microsoft may be a bit behind Apple and Google in creating an application store for mobile devices, it appears the software conglomerate has something in the works. According to Computerworld, Microsoft recently posted a job listing for a Skymarket Senior Product Manager. After reading the list of responsibilities for this position, it becomes clear that Skymarket is Microsoft’s name for an application store that is intended to be available with Windows Mobile 7.

I’m excited about the possibility of one-stop shopping for new applications, though I hope Microsoft makes the store available to previous generations of Windows Mobile as well as Windows Mobile 7. Although marketplaces such as Handango and PocketGear are great for Windows Mobile devices, they aren’t nearly as convenient as Apple’s App Store, and there’s something to be said for ease of use and convenience.
